This Les Paul Ultra Pro is simply one of the most comfortable Les Pauls I have ever played. I've always been a fan of that Les Paul sound. You know, big and thick, with a chest-thumping mid range presence. It's the kind of tone that melts the front end of your tube amp. The problem for me has always been playing one. I'm not a big fan of strapping 9 + pounds of guitar over my shoulder for a 4-hour gig. And the guitar's flat back always dug into my boney ribs. This beautiful guitar addresses these issues while keeping all of the Les Paul goodness that we feed upon.

Epiphone has weight-relieved the Ultra Pro's body by chambering the mahogany before gluing on the maple top. The result is that this specific guitar weighs but 7 lb, 8 oz! That's more than a pound less than most LPs I see. Additionally, this guitar's back has a comfortable "belly carve" that allows it to nestle in close to your chest. The super smooth satin finish neck has a very inviting soft "D" shaped profile that feels at home the instant you pick it up.

The Les Paul Ultra Pro now features Epi's ProBucker pickups for that one-of-a kind Les Paul sound. ProBucker pickups feature Alnico II magnets, the same magnets used in sought-after vintage PAF humbuckers. Alnico II magnets provide a rich, warm tone with a sparkling high end and a solid low end. There's a ProBucker-2 in the neck position and a ProBucker-3 in the bridge position. The ProBucker-3 is slightly overwound to provide balance with the neck pickup and a bit of edge for lead work. ProBuckers emulate the sound of original PAF PUPs which were hand-wound. Both the neck and bridge pickups now also feature coil-splitting, controlled by a push/pull volume control, allowing players an infinite variety of pickup tones from single-coil bark to full humbucker bite.

When winding humbuckers, Epiphone uses a double vacuum waxing process that ensures quiet operation free from microphonic squeal. The pickup is first placed in the specialized wax vacuuming system before the cover is placed on the unit to ensure that the wax fully penetrates to the very center of the pickup and solidifies all parts. After the cover is placed on, it is again given a second vacuum wax bath until the unit is completely saturated with wax. Epiphone uses only the highest quality parts for its pickups, such as ABS plastic bobbins, 1010 Cold Rolled Steel pole shoes and pole screws, Alnico magnets and the finest magnet wire available. If you can't find good tone with this axe, it may be time to switch to clarinet.

Hardware on this LP is first rate. The LockTone bridge and tailpiece are rock-solid and a significant improvement over the traditional "Loose-O-Matic" setup. The genuine 14:1 Grover tuners are smooth, sure and tight. The action is very fast and the intonation is right on the money. If you missed this model during its production period, it's time to stop kickin' yourself in the rear-end and make your move!

This specific guitar needed no refurbishing and looks even better "up close" than in the pictures. Epi stopped production of this model and examples this good are becoming increasingly hard to find.

About Our Setup:

This guitar played "well enough to sell" when it arrived here at LightSpeed Music. Still, I have just given it a complete "post factory" setup. First, the truss rod was checked and adjusted. Then the frets were leveled crowned and polished. These first two steps allowed me to lower the bridge and nut, and yet, still keep it completely buzz free. The fretboard was conditioned and the nut slots were lubed and polished. The electronics were tested and then given a protective application of contact cleaner and lube. Everything was snugged up and the guitar was polished. It received a fresh set of S.I.T. Power Wound strings gauged .010" to .046" and then the intonation was set. Now, this guitar plays very well and will please even the most demanding professional.
