This Tanglewood TW73-VS Parlor Guitar is a vintage sunburst acoustic guitar with uncompromising build quality and premium materials in a compact and professional package. The TW73-VS is built with a solid A grade cedar top and a solid mahogany back. The satin finished, one-piece mahogany neck is topped with a rosewood fretboard, and is decorated with Canadian maple and herringbone binding. The tone of the small-bodied TW73-VS is delightfully resonant and quite well balanced...not always the case with parlor guitars. This would be an excellent choice as a songwriter's companion or anyone wanting a very articulate and precise sound. This guitar would also fit very well into an already dense mix.

Acoustic guitars will always be judged first and foremost by the types and species of tonewoods used in their construction. The TW73 cuts no corners in this department. The guitar's top is solid cedar, offering it a warm and soothing voice. The back is solid mahogany, bringing volume, bass and presence to the mix. The neck is one-piece mahogany. That's right, there is no cost cutting “scarf joint” where the neck and headstock meet. This upgrade is typically unheard of these days...especially at this price point. Notice too, the neck/headstock joint features a traditional diamond volute, adding strength to what is every guitar's weakest point.

The TW73's neck has a slightly fuller “V” profile that sits very comfortably in the hand. It isn't a vintage “baseball bat” neck, but players with an inclination toward “spaghetti” necks could find it taking some time to become accustomed to. The rosewood fretboard is bound in figured maple and is capped with 19 precisely dressed medium frets. The tuning machines work very smoothly and are even tension adjustable...yet another uncommon upgrade. Both the nut and saddle are genuine bone. No plastic parts on this guitar!

One of the ways to get maximum volume from a guitar is to join the neck to the body at the 12th, not 14th fret. Doing so moves the bridge right to the widest point in the lower bout, allowing much more string vibration to be transferred to the guitar's top. This is especially important in smaller bodied instruments such as a parlor guitar. The sound hole is a touch smaller at 3-1/4” diameter, resulting in increased low-end response.

While taking pictures of this guitar, we noticed a small area of finish blush on the back of the headstock. It is barely noticeable, but can be seen in the closeup. This is a new guitar, in unplayed condition and many dealers might let something like this go unmentioned, but that just isn't our style.
