This Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II Pro guitar has the standard Gibson style layout of two humbucker pickups, two volume, two tone, and a three-way toggle switch above the fretboard. The use of a traditional trapeze tailpiece and height-adjustable rosewood bridge give this guitar the warm, smooth sound of the best “jazz boxes”. This is an "Uptown" guitar and as such, has very high-end appointments. The body, neck and headstock all have elaborate, multi-ply bindings. The body is beautifully flamed maple and all hardware is gold. You don't have to be wearing a Tux when gigging with this axe, but it would seem appropriate.

Auditioned through a vintage Fender Princeton Reverb amp, the tone of this hollowbody guitar ranges from a rich mellow sound from the neck pickup to surprisingly bright from the bridge pickup. With the Joe Pass Emperor II, you get the authentic look, feel and sound of a great jazz guitar without buying into some of the overpriced electric guitars currently on the market.

The Emperor-II Pro has a hand-set 3-piece laminated hard maple neck with a rosewood fretboard that has beautiful pearloid block inlays, 20 medium jumbo frets, and is topped off with the Epiphone-vintage style “tree of life” design seen on the best Epiphone archtops since the late 1930s. The neck has Epi's 1960s SlimTaper C-Profile and feels absolutely great in the player's hand.

I would describe this axe as having a sweet tone, with just enough twang and punch to really make blues riffs sound full. Of course, it's great for jazz, but it can do country or even Christian worship styles.

Epiphone outfitted this beauty with a pair of their ProBucker pickups and added coil tapping capabilities to it. Pulling up on either pickups' volume pot places that pickup into single coil mode, so the number of sound combinations is nearly limitless. Epiphone ProBucker pickups have that elusive PAF tone because they are made with the same alloy as the originals--18% Nickel Silver unit bases and covers--along with Sand cast Alnico II magnets and high quality 4-conductor lead wire. Each ProBucker pickup is also vacuum wax potted to eliminate microphonics.

Joe Pass was known as the “President" of bebop guitar. He was raised near Jamestown, Pennsylvania, but as a teenager Joe headed for New York City where his inventive, fluid lines, advanced harmonic knowledge, and endless well of melodic ideas were immediately recognized. Perhaps Pass’ best work was for Norman Granz’ Pablo label, based in Los Angeles. During his career, Joe recorded with a Who’s Who of jazz greats including Les McCaan, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, and Milt Jackson.

This specific guitar is 100% free of any players wear. The finish is free of scratches or dings. It is discounted because Epi marked it as a "2nd" due to one tiny dimple under the finish, just below the bridge, which can be seen in the final closeup.

This guitar played "well enough to sell" when it arrived here at LightSpeed Music. Still, I have just given it a complete "post factory" setup. First, the truss rod was checked and adjusted. Then the frets were leveled crowned and polished. These first two steps allowed me to lower the bridge and improve the action to better than factory specs, and yet, still keep it completely buzz free. The fretboard was conditioned and the nut slots were lubed and polished. The electronics were tested and then given a protective application of contact cleaner and lube. Everything was snugged up and the guitar was polished. It received a fresh set of S.I.T. Flatwound strings gauged .011" to .050" and then the intonation was set. Now, this guitar plays very well and will please even the most demanding professional.

You Can Add A New Gator Case To Your Order!
You can add a new Gator GW-Dread Deluxe hard case to your order for only an additional $99.99, and it would be a very wise decision. This is a well-made, wood arch-top case with a durable Tolex exterior, padded handle, and heavy hardware. The plush-lined interior is densely padded and includes an accessory compartment. I'm sorry, but the case is not available separately.
