In 2014, Epiphone proudly announced the Ltd Ed 2014 Tak Matsumoto DC Custom. It was the first Tak Matsumoto-designed signature model by Epiphone to be made available outside of Japan. Designed by Tak Matsumoto exclusively with Epiphone, the Ltd Ed 2014 Tak Matsumoto DC (“double cutaway”) Custom is the signature “Tak” that fans around the world have been waiting for. The Tak Matsumoto DC Custom brings together the artistry of Tak Matsumoto and his long association with Epiphone in spectacular fashion. Tak is known throughout the world for his blistering solos, his groundbreaking work with the pop band B'z, and his stunning GRAMMY-winning album with jazz great and close friend Larry Carlton. But Matsumoto is also revered for his beautiful Epiphone signature models that up until recently have only been available in Japan.
This guitar is easily on par with some of the expensive double cuts seen coming out of a very well respected Maryland builder. The mahogany neck is very fast and without the oversized heel that Mr. Smith's instruments carry. The ebony fretboard is a smooth as glass and the block inlays are perfectly executed without any trace of filler. This specific example is blissfully light, tipping the scales at a ballerina-like 7 lb. 2 oz.
What puts this guitar into the elite class is its pickups. “Under the hood” you'll find a pair of US made Gibson Burstbuckers. The earliest Gibson “Patent Applied For” humbuckers were wound using imprecise machines, resulting in pickups with varying degrees of output and tone. And BurstBuckers represent Gibson’s drive to recapture the magic of the original PAFs. These Gibson BurstBuckers completely nailed the subtle variations of true, classic humbucker tone with historically “unmatched” bobbin windings and Alnico II magnets. They have a rich, energetic voice, and when overdriven they achieve a magical distortion, with the slightly enhanced highs that made the originals famous. The neck's Type 2 features medium output, and presents a deliciously warm, yet airy tone. At the bridge, the BurstBucker Type 3 is overwound and hot, and will cut through a dense mix like a proverbial hot knife through butter. A pair of these PUPs alone will set you back nearly 300 bucks. And they're worth every penny.
Included with your guitar is the Tak-branded Epiphone hard case...this custom guitar deserves no less.
This specific example is 100% free of any player's wear and needed no refurbishing. It is discounted because Epi marked it "2nd" due to one tiny flaw in the binding which can be seen in the final closeup.
Sure, this guitar played "well enough to sell" when it arrived here at LightSpeed Music. Still, I have just given it a complete "post factory" setup. First, the truss rod was checked and adjusted. Then the frets were leveled crowned and polished. These first two steps allowed me to lower the bridge and improve the action to better than factory specs, and yet, still keep it completely buzz free. The fretboard was conditioned and the nut slots were lubed and polished. The electronics were tested and then given a protective application of contact cleaner and lube. Everything was snugged up and the guitar was polished. It received a fresh set of S.I.T. Power Wound strings gauged .010" to .046" and then the intonation was set. Now, this guitar plays very well and will please those of us that find factory setups to be a little less than perfect.
